Public asked to roll dice on proposal

Pattaya residents and businesses will get a say on whether they want the proposed casino in their city through an opinion survey.

Pattaya city mayor Pairat Suthidamrongsawasdi said a working group, headed by the Chon Buri assistant district chief, had commissioned Burapa and Sripathum universities to conduct the survey between yesterday and Wednesday in Pattaya city and the Bang Lamung district.

Pattaya city will foot the estimated 200,000-baht bill for the survey.

Mr Pairat, who has come out in favour of the casino, said the survey would likely be wrapped up by Oct 18. The findings would be passed on to the government. Legal casinos in Thailand would draw people who would otherwise have travelled abroad to gamble.

He said Pattaya was an ideal location for casinos. It was a popular tourist destination and there were many hotels willing to rent out their properties to be developed into casinos.

He dismissed the argument banning Togel Hari Ini casinos on the ground of Buddhist precept against gambling. Mr Pairat said some Islamic countries had also opened their doors to casinos.

Minister Offers Support to Gambling in Taiwan

TAIWAN – As reported by the Taipei Times: “Minister of the Interior Yu Cheng-hsien yesterday told the Legislative Yuan that he personally likes the idea of legalizing gambling in Penghu, but that he would follow the Executive Yuan’s final decision.

“…Yu said that he believes the authorities have the ability to maintain Pengu’s security if gambling legislation is passed.

“…The debate over legalizing gambling in Penghu has been raging for more than five years.

“The Cabinet has never been able to reach a consensus on the issue because of disagreements between the various ministries and agencies.

“Supporters of legalized gambling say it would attract investment to the islands and create job opportunities for local residents.

“Critics argue that gambling would not only damage the islands’ security and environment, but also increase the cost of living there.

“…Yu admitted yesterday that many Cabinet agencies are opposed to the gambling proposal, but he said that he supported the establishment of casinos, based on his understanding of casino operations.

“`A gambling casino at a holiday resort is just part of resort, no different than the Chinese or Italian restaurants belonging to it,’ Yu told reporters…”
